We
are a group of graduate students
concerned about high rates of
sexually transmitted diseases,
including HIV/AIDS and unplanned
pregnancies in adolescents and
teenagers. Each student in our group
is simultaneously pursuing a Medical
Degree and a Master of Health
Administration Degree. The Students
for Safe Sex became organized
through a class project in Dr.
Kenya’s research methods class.
Through our course curriculum and
individual research endeavors, we
realized that young people need
effective health information about
sexual risks, as the sexual health
information offered in public
schools does not meet sexual
education needs of most adolescents
and teenagers. High rates of
unplanned pregnancies and sexually
transmitted diseases, including HIV
among young people further validates
the need for effective sexual health
communications. Our Public Service
Announcement Project was developed
to help meet the sexual education
communication needs for this
population.
